Time for an update...........

Hello all
Time to get everyone brought up to speed.
Last Wednesday, the 18th of March, I took Fremont, our male golden eagle into our vet. I didn't like the way his wrist injury was looking. We've had problems with that all along. The break was comprised of so many bones, repair was iffy at best.

When the vet in Payson looked at it, he immediately started pulling the pins out of it. They were loose and not really doing any good at all. There had always been a drainage from that surgical site, and we have done our best to keep that clean and medicated when we felt it necessary. Unfortunately, the bone was dying in that area, while the surrounding tissue looked great.
The decision was make to amputate that portion, loosing his primary feathers in the amputation. If you'll recall, Fremont is going to the Zuni people as a non-releasable bird.
I think this was the best decision and he's getting along just fine. He's probably free of some pain from the bones that wouldn't fuse and heal and those loose pins.
We put him out into the flight pen with the girls, Glory and Ivy. He's back on pain meds and antibiotics. We're changing his bandages every 4-5 days and happy with the progress.

Tomorrow, Walter, the turkey vulture, will be headed for his new home in Phoenix, Arizona. He will go with another turkey vulture, that one is from Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, also non-releasable. They will be going to a facility called Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center. We will get pictures of the transfer (my leg of it) and post those later. I hope he'll have a wonderful life, hanging out with other vultures, as he would in the wild.
I hope everyone likes the new look for the blogsite. I discovered this talented man from another blogsite and emailed him. He was gracious to do this for my group and I am so pleased!
Please go to his link to see his wonderful works. Thanks again Klaus!

Great site and wonderful work you are doing. was kind of scarry to log in and hear the music from my very own playlist playing. Good luck with the birds.

Feathered brothers and sisters, you came to us broken and as you bled…….we saw you desperate, dehydrated, desiccated, diseased, distressed, emaciated, famished, frayed, frightened, helpless, hungry, ragged, ravenous, shaken, shocked, shot, sickly, stressed, stunned, tattered, thirsty, traumatized, torn, weary and wounded. Defiantly, you stood us off with your last breath as we tried to tend to you. We saw you come in as cute, naked, fuzzy, cuddly youth, as mischievous, defiant adolescents, as fierce, regal rulers of the sky and as cunning, maimed elders whose time on earth was almost done. You endeared yourselves to us, bit us, charmed us, footed us, delighted us, hissed at us, talked to us, mantled at us, and graced us with your presence.

Some of you mended and were able to go on your way, never looking back. Some of you were injured in ways that prevented you from going, so you stayed with us to teach us…….And we came to love you. Others were too far gone, and you went home - where you fly free from pain with the Great One. All of you have touched us, and we are changed because of you.
